What is an Ionic Hair Dryer?

What is an Ionic Hair Dryer?

At Handryers UK we stock a range commercial hair dryers. They are designed to be used in high-traffic, environments for extended periods of time. However, despite their intended use, don’t think that these products set commercial efficiency over quality. Within our range of hair dryers we stock a number of ionic hair dryers, built for commercial usage.

What is an ionic hair dryer?

An ionic hair dryer uses negative ions to break down the water molecules in wet hair into much smaller particles. As these particles are much smaller, it speeds up the drying process compared with traditional hair dryers that simply rely on heat to evaporate the water away.

This reliance on particle breakdown, over heat, comes with a number of benefits compared with normal hair dryers.

Are Ionic hair dryers better?

As mentioned above, Ionic hair dryers are better than traditional hair dryers in a number of ways.

Faster drying times

Due to the particles being broken down and made smaller, drying times are improved. This means less heat and stress on your hair. They are also simply more convenient as drying times are reduced.

Reduced frizz and static

Ionic hair dryers reduce frizz and static in the hair because the negative ions don’t open up the hair shafts. This helps to keep the hair smooth and sleek.

You can use a lower temperature to dry your hair

As an ionic hair dryer is not solely relying on heat to evaporate the moisture and dry your hair, you can use a lower temperature. This is not only less damaging to the hair, but uses less power as the heating elements are more energy efficient and overall dry times are shortened.

What Are the Drawbacks of Ionic Hairdryers?

While there are obvious numerous benefits to using an ionic hair dryer, there are some drawbacks which need to be mentioned.

It is easy to over-dry the hair

As ionic hair dryers dry hair so quickly, it is easy to go too far with it and over-dry the hair. Over-drying hair can lead to dryness, breakages and damage. It is important to be aware of this until you have regular practice with an ionic hair dryer. Other things that can cause over-dry hair is using harsh products, over washing, rough towel drying and brushing wet hair. So be particularly conscious of this when using an ionic hair dryer.

They are potentially not suited to thin hair

Given how they work, ionic hair dryers have a tendency to leave thin hair looking flat and tired looking. If you have fine hair then a ceramic hair dryer may be a better option for you. These are known for having better heat distribution and no hot-spots which is better for fine hair.

They are more expensive than normal hair dryers

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the improved technology found in them, ionic hair dryers tend to be more expensive than ‘normal’ hair dryers, which may be a factor when looking at your next hair dryer.

How to choose an ionic hair dryer model

There are variations of models within ionic hair dryers, that may help you decide which is the best for you and your circumstances. Things like motor speeds, heating element types and attachments can change the suitability to certain hair types. Below we’ve listed out a few different hair types and situations which may affect your decision.

  • Fine or Flat Hair: As mentioned above, an ionic hair dryer might not be the best for you and instead try a ceramic hair dryer.
  • Thick or Coarse Hair: A hair dryer that has a high-wattage and uses heating elements like titanium or tourmaline will speed up the drying process.
  • Curly Hair: Look for a model that comes with a diffuser attachment.
  • Damaged or Colored Hair: A ceramic dryer with multiple heat settings prevents excessive drying – similar to fine hair.
  • Frequent Traveler: A lightweight, foldable model with dual voltage is ideal.
